Deputy Chairperson of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Belarus Natallia Karpovich meets the Head of the OSCE ODIHR Election Observation Mission in Belarus

On 24 October 2019 the Deputy Chairperson of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Belarus Natallia Karpovich met with the Head of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) Election Observation Mission, Cornelia Willemien Anke Jonker.

Natallia Karpovich informed the representatives of the OSCE ODIHR Election Observation Mission about the competence of the Constitutional Court, activities on ensuring the supremacy of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus, review of the constitutionality of normative legal acts, including electoral legislation, as well as about the procedure for access of authorised state bodies and individuals to the Constitutional Court.

In turn, Cornelia Jonker reported on the activities of the OSCE ODIHR Election Observation Mission in Belarus with a view to their compliance with OSCE commitments, national legislation, and standards for democratic elections.

During the meeting, the parties discussed a range of issues related to the constitutional and legal aspects of calling and holding of elections, constitutional foundations of the electoral system, improvement of the citizens' access to constitutional justice, participation of the Belarusian representative in the activities of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission).
