The judge of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Belarus Natalya Karpovich took part in the International Conference “Judicial Activism of Constitutional Courts in a Democratic State” devoted to the 20th anniversary of the Constitutional Court of the of the Republic of Latvia which was held on 26-27 May 2016 in Riga (Republic of Latvia)
The conference was attended by representatives of the constitutional review bodies of Austria, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Georgia, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Romania, Portugal, Turkey, Ukraine, Montenegro, the Czech Republic, Estonia and other European countries as well as European Commission for democracy through Law (Venice Commission), the European Court of human Rights, the Court of Justice of the European Union. A welcoming speech was delivered by the President of the Republic of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis.
During the сonference it was noted that the constitutional court, when carrying out activities on the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals and other constitutional values, provides an interpretation of the Constitution. However, such activities of the court have their limits beyond which the court may go beyond its competence. The participants underlined the importance of a constructive dialogue between the constitutional court and the legislator.

Ms Natalya Karpovich made a presentation on “Interpretative Activity and the Principle of Judicial Restraint in the Constitutional Justice”.
