The Chairman of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Belarus Petr P. Miklashevich participated in the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation, which took place on 27–29 October 2011 in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
The grand meeting devoted to the 20th anniversary of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation was held in the Alexander Hall of the Moscow Kremlin on 27 October 2011. It was attended by representatives of the supreme bodies of state power of the Russian Federation, foreign bodies of constitutional justice, the European Court of Human Rights.
At the grand meeting the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry A. Medvedev said in his speech that the establishment of the Constitutional Court was a key event in the history of modern Russia and congratulated the judges on the anniversary, thanked them for the great responsibility, devotion to their duty and professionalism.
On 28–29 October 2011 in the Congress Palace (St. Petersburg) was held the International Conference “Constitutional Review: Doctrine and Practice”, devoted to the 20th anniversary of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation.
The forum was attended by chairmen of constitutional review bodies, academics and practitioners from over 47 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. The burning problems of constitutional review, the role of constitutional courts in protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens, issues of independence of the judiciary were under discussion.
In his intervention at the Conference the Chairman of the Constitutional Court Petr P. Miklashevich told the forum about the stages of the establishment and development of constitutional justice in the Republic of Belarus. At that he emphasised current changes in the constitutional review of our country that are aimed at creating a system-integrated approach to confirmation of the supremacy of the Constitution, at protecting constitutional values, developing constitutional democracy, ensuring the rule of law.
During the working meetings the heads of constitutional courts discussed prospects for bilateral and multilateral co-operation and exchanged views on the most important issues of the development of constitutional justice.
